Hoping in the Promises

Remember Your word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hopePsalm 119:49

at the dockGod, You are the only one who has the power to bring Your promises to pass. If I make a promise, I have the best intentions of keeping it, but I can't control everything. When I tell my son I'll pick him up after school, I'm assuming the car will start, that everyone will be healthy, that no other circumstance will intervene.

There is nothing beyond Your control, and therefore nothing can prevent You from keeping Your promises. There are no circumstances You fail to foresee. There is no individual that hinders You. You make promises with perfect knowledge.

When promises made to me have failed or been broken repeatedly, I give up hope.

Your sure word CAUSES hope.

I depend on that.

Announcing: My First Book

Confetti and noisemakers

THIS WEEK – I signed a contract with Mindstir Media for my novel Contingency. Here's a teaser-

Where was God?

Bobbi Molinsky’s comfortable life is shattered when a forwarded email from her husband’s account lands in her inbox. The email teases, “My whole evening is free again.” After an angry confrontation with Chuck, she is left with the broken remains of an eighteen year marriage.

Where is God?

Bobbi agrees forgiving Chuck is the right thing, the God-honoring thing to do, but it leaves her empty and isolated. Teaching her second-graders is a burden. Taking care of her boys saps all her energy. It seems God Himself has walked away, leaving her to struggle alone.

Is God faithful?

Bobbi can’t deny the transformation in Chuck, but genuine forgiveness requires trust, and trust is a risk she’s not willing to take. Can she let go of her deepest, most primal fears and save her marriage?

The book will be available online in trade paperback, Kindle and audiobook formats, and we will be contacting bookstores as well. Check the blog on Fridays for updates. My monthly newsletter will have info as well. (Sign up in that blue box on the right.)

To my blogging buddies- I'd love to get you an advance copy. Just send me a message.

Another One of Those Days

A new dayThis is one of those Thursdays. You know the type. I woke up exhausted. I did run, but I missed my marks for speed, time and distance. I'm late with my blog post. All those nagging things I left on Wednesday are still there and they've brought friends. No delusions about progress today. It'll be a miracle just holding my ground.

This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

But I don't want to. I don't feel like it. I'd rather go back to bed.

God made the day. He knows what's in store for me and He's signed off on all of it. My frustration comes from having things unfold contrary to my expectations. Naturally, I expect everything to click along, smooth as silk. God knows my need for a sense of accomplishment may not be as great as my need for a deeper dependence on Him.

The thing is, it's not the day, or the God who made it that's the issue. It's my response to it. And I choose my response. I have my doubts whether I can pull "rejoicing" off. But by choosing it, the Holy Spirit takes over and He brings rejoicing.

How do you handle days when you feel behind or frustrated?

STT: Just the Facts

Sherlock Holmes wannabeAs you study, you run into them- genealogy lists, temple building instructions, missionary journey travel logs. What can you possibly take away from them if you're not into details? Here are some new perspectives on some of these more tedious (boring) sections of Scripture.

Genealogy and Census records- God uses ordinary people to accomplish His purposes. He knows each one, their history and their background, just as He knows ours, and in grace, He not only includes us in His work, but He records that for all eternity. Your name may not be written in Scripture, but it's recorded in God's ledgers. (1 Corinthians 1:26not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called.)

Lists of offerings- In Numbers 7, for example, there is a huge list of the offerings each tribe brought as the tabernacle system was instituted. It's repetitive, and I often wondered why we couldn't have a much shorter chapter- "Each of the leaders brought …" But what's boring for us, God never tires of. He delights in EVERY offering, EVERY act of worship. It never gets old. If He accepts our worship with such intense delight, shouldn't that change how we offer it?

Temple-building instructions- You find these in Exodus for the tabernacle, in 1 Kings for the first temple and in the last chapters of Ezekiel for the millenial temple. Then there's wall-building in Nehemiah. I admit, those last chapters of Ezekiel are tough to wade through. Why does God do that to us? Just to kill our read-thru the Bible plans? No. Part of it goes back to the point I made about offering and God's delight in our worship. However, it also shows God's care and attention to detail. He has a right way that He wants things done. When we undertake something for God, it must be done His way and not ours. However, more significant than this, the temple and tabernacle represented God's physical presence with His people. When we see the cumbersome requirements that must be met before we can approach a holy God, we get a much greater appreciation for the what Christ's redemptive work did for us.

Missionary logs- If you're not into first century Mediterranean geography, wouldn't it be just as easy to say "Paul made a lot of stops." Yes, but we'd miss some insights, such as God has a plan. The places Paul went were not the only cities around, but they were ones God wanted Paul to go to. There are plenty on ministries around doing good work, but we can't work at all of them. God has a place for us, a route He wants us to take. Those other cities, other ministries- He's got somebody lined up for them.

Now when you read Scripture and hit some details that are … well, boring, take a minute before your eyes glaze over, and ask God why He wanted all that stuff in His word. What can you take away from it? You'll find out GOD is in the details.

Nothing Between

Sunlight filtering through treesTake away my foolish desires, and let me find life by walking with you. Psalm 119:37 (CEV)

There are so many things demanding a place on my schedule, vying for my attention. Don't let me waste Your gift of time with things that don't honor You, things that don't have lasting value.

Like a child, I want everything I see. Take away my foolish desires.

Let me find life, contentment, satisfaction by walking with You.

Let me achieve that Edenic communion You always intended for us to have with You.

Nothing between.
