Contingency Update
Just in time for a July 31 deadline, I submitted chapter 1 of Contingency to a contest. The top six entries will be forwarded to an agent and then who knows what could happen. Say a prayer and I'll let you know how we did in the November newsletter. (Yes, November.)Read the first chapter here.
Editing
Here are some editing tips I've picked up.

  • The helping verb 'had' is rarely necessary. Keeping the action in the present is less confusing anyway.
  • Use active voice. After the world falls in on page one of the story, the characters act.
  • 'He said' or 'she said' is rarely needed. There are other ways to indicate who is speaking such as adding body language cues.
  • Everybody hates adverbs. They indicate lazy writing – 'showing' and not 'telling' – which amounts to the kiss of death.

I plan to post Chapter 1 of Indemnity on the site once it's edited.

New Book
This month, I'm ready to start drafting a new book. Here's the setup: Claire Jamison (Nick's attorney whom we loved) is back and getting ready for her oldest daughter's wedding. Brooke not only invited her father, Claire's ex, to the wedding but she wants her dad to give her away. Did I mention, the bitter divorce was over Mike's revelation that he was gay? Another fluffy book, I know. If you'd like to see the opening chapter, send me an email and I'll put you on the list. (My regular readers- don't worry. I gotcha covered.)

Vacation
I posted several times about what I learned on vacation. Check here and here. The lessons aren't over.
Web Site Traffic Spike
My Friday Update post including  comments on Anne Jackson's Mad Church Disease caused record-breaking traffic on my site! To celebrate, I'm going to give away a copy… for real. Email to enter with Mad Church as the subject. (P.S. If you know anybody else who might be interested, feel free to forward the info.) Let's say Aug. 24th is the deadline.
