Lord Jesus, think on me,
and purge away my sin;
from earth-born passions set me free,
and make me pure within.
Lord Jesus, think on me,
with care and woe oppressed,
let me Thy loving servant be,
and taste Thy promised rest.
Lord Jesus, think on me,
nor let me go astray;
through darkness and perplexity
point Thou the heav’nly way.
Lord Jesus, think on me,
that, when the flood is past,
I may eternal brightness see,
and share Thy joy at last.
Synesius of Cyrene, Bishop of Ptolemais, circa 400 AD; Translated Allen William Chatfield, 1876
Read Psalm 40:1-5
(God thinks of us. It’s an amazing realization, really, and one that captured the psalmist and the hymnwriter from hundreds of years ago as well as the modern worship leaders. God never just thinks of us. The thoughts are also connected to His strong right hand, to His movement and intervention on our behalf, saving us, sanctifying us, and bringing us to glory. What thoughts of Him do we carry through our day?)
