Call to Him

By Paula Wiseman

“Thus says the Lord who made it, the Lord who formed it to establish it (the Lord is His name): ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:2-3

I love verse 3, but I often read it without verse 2. I've been missing out.

The promise in verse 3 is amazing, but considering the One who makes it, it is breath-taking.

Jehovah God, who chose us and revealed Himself to us…
Who creates, orders and establishes says,

Call to Me.

Too often I mumble, afraid that my request isn't that important. He encourages me to call out boldly

And He promises
To answer
To reveal
To enlighten

Call to Him.

Buoys

By Paula Wiseman

I spent some time at the beach last week.

A series of buoys marked the boundary for safe swimming. I watched the waves crash in from every direction and batter those buoys.

They were anchored, though.

We have an anchor. Hebrews 6:19 says "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast."

What hope? The promise God made to redeem us and bless us.

The waves will come against us.

We are anchored.

And the anchor will hold. God promised it would.

Rethinking the Journey

By Paula Wiseman

In Numbers 33, there is a detailed account of the journey Israel took from the day they left Egypt until they reached the border of the Promised Land. It's long and boring to us because we didn't live it, didn't experience the miracles and failures.

In verse 3, it says they started out "boldly", "triumphantly" as they left Egypt. That didn't last. A lot of the chapter is about moving from place to place with nothing else to note.

It made me think about my own journey.

Has my bold triumphant beginning withered to a dusty routine, marking time, checking off a list?

Are the only notable events (v. 14) the times I complained about not having my needs met, or not getting my way?

But then the wandering stops. In verse 53, God says "you shall take possession of the land and live in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it."

See that?
You shall take possession of [what God has graciously promised] and live in [that promise], for I have given [that gracious promise] to you to possess it.

Isn't taking possession of God's promise better than wandering and complaining?

God didn't give us a set of conditions.

There are no eligibility requirements.

He doesn't restrict Himself to the first 5000 or even 5 million.

He doesn't take our information and promise to get back to us.

He doesn't even give us forms to fill out.

He gives us a promise.

Not just any promise.

His promise.

And whoever comes to me I will never cast out. John 6:37

Promise of a Snow Day

By Paula Wiseman

(If you're not a snow person, you'll have to some up with your own analogy on this one.)

We got a snow day today. We had one Monday, too. All through Sunday school, the kids and I tried to stay focused on the lesson while keeping an eye on the white stuff outside. Once we got home, the first thing my son did was get the "snow candle" out and light it. He lit it again yesterday afternoon.

The candle doesn't "make" it snow. It's just a fun way to express our hopes for a day off.

God makes promises far more sure than the weather forecast. While I've seen many of them fulfilled, He assures us, "You ain't seen nothing yet!" (That's a paraphrase Isaiah 64:4 & 1 Corinthians 2:9)

He promises things like – "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with my right hand." (Isaiah 41:10)

During Christmas, we celebrate the fulfillment of His greatest promise- sending a Savior and making a way for us to spend eternity with Him. We even light candles to express that. Today and everyday, may we live in hopeful anticipation of the final completion of that promise!

God Takes Notes

By Paula Wiseman

stack of spiral notebooks"Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised." Genesis 21:1 (NAS)

Then – When the timing was right. When the events lined up. When Sarah and everyone else affected was ready to receive.

The Lord took note – His attention focused on her.

Of Sarah – a specific individual whom Jehovah God knew by name.

As He said – 25 years earlier God made a promise to Sarah and to Abraham that they would have a son.

And the Lord did – He took action.

For Sarah – A personal intervention on Sarah's behalf. God brings all His sovereign power to Sarah's situation.

As He had promised – God never spouts vain words or makes empty promises. He keeps and fulfills everything He says.

God knows us by name and thoroughly understands our situations. He keeps His promises and He acts on our behalf. We must take care not to lose faith in Him in that time before the "then".
