Rise up, O men of God!
Have done with lesser things;
Give heart and mind and soul and strength
To serve the King of kings.
Rise up, O men of God!
His kingdom tarries long;
Bring in the day of brotherhood
And end the night of wrong.
Lift high the cross of Christ!
Tread where his feet have trod;
As brothers of the Son of man,
Rise up, O men of God!
William Pierson Merrill, 1911
Read 2 Samuel 10:12
(There are half a dozen or so occasions in the Psalms where the writer calls on God to arise. It is usually a cry to right some injustice or to intervene on behalf of His people. While we need God to act in divine justice, we also must be ready to act. The people of God cannot be passive, cannot be bystanders, cannot wait for someone else to take the lead or the initiative. Give heart and mind and soul and strength to serve the King of Kings. Rise up!)
