Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has said we will do, and be obedient.” Exodus 24:7
All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.
They didn’t expect to fail.
When Israel made this promise, this commitment, they had the best intentions of fulfilling it.
They overestimated their devotion to the God who brought them out of Egypt.
They underestimated how the changes necessary.
They couldn’t foresee the golden calf.
The broken tablets.
Or the wilderness wandering.
We’re no different.
We have good intentions.
I’ll give this up. I’ll change this. I’ll do this every day starting … tomorrow.
We overestimate our abilities.
We underestimate our dependence.
We don’t foresee the pitfalls.
We find we’re all talk.
Even so, God says, “My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
