The Few Who Go or the “We” Who Stay

By Paula

In Numbers 13, Moses sent a group of spies to check out Canaan. Forty days later, they returned. The land is great, they said, but the people are intimidating and the cities are fortified strongholds. They're unreachable. However, Joshua and Caleb added, "The Lord is with us. Do not fear them." (Num 14:9) God brought us here, He gave us the land, He will see to it that we take possession of it.

We know how the story goes. The nation listened to the majority report and a generation died without receiving what God had promised. They chose to believe what they saw rather than the God who sent them.

Fast forward hundreds of years. Jesus stood on a mountain and He said to go. Now we go and we scout things out and we report back to Him, "But Lord, the people are intimidating and the cities are unreachable." We don't go any further. We stay and we wander and we die off.

Except for a few.

A few who understand what Jesus meant when He said "All power, all authority has been given to me, and I'm telling you to go."

A few who believe 'the Lord is with us, do not fear them.'

Too often, most times even, I'm one of the "we." Intimidated. Staying. Wandering. But here's the thing. It's not just the generation of believers who will die off. There's a generation of folks who have never heard the name of Jesus except as a swear word. A generation who only knows Christians as silly caricatures or sign-waving protestors. They've never met the life-changing Savior who redeems, who heals, who transforms. And they'll die off, too.

Unless I and the rest of the "we" choose to trust God and His power and His plan more than I and "we" trust what we see.

What are "we" gonna do? Stay or Go?

Study Tip: Romans

By Paula

Romans is one of the cornerstones of the New Testament. In it, Paul lays out the key doctrines of Christianity in a logical progression. It's hardly a dry dissertation, though. Martin Luther touched off the Protestant Reformation when he grasped what Paul had written. The truths even make Paul stop and praise God. (See 11:33-36)

So how should you study Romans?

Slowly. Intentionally. Reverently. Just like any other study, right?

The book is roughly divided into three sections- Why we need salvation, how it's accomplished and how we should live as a result. A quick overview should answer those questions.

To go deeper, Romans lends itself to key word studies. Try tracking these words and recording what you learn about each of them:
  • Sin
  • Righteousness
  • Faith/ Believe
  • Hope
  • Grace

Another approach is to watch for all that GOD does.

Paul uses transition words like therefore frequently. Sometimes it's helpful to watch for the cause and effect on either side of the "therefore".

Finally, if you like to memorize Scripture, Romans is full of great material.

What's your favorite verse or passage in Romans?

Gotta be the Shoes

By Paula

Another important lesson I've learned about running is that shoes matter. When I started, it was pure, dumb luck that I had good shoes. However, when those wore out, so did my luck. My second pair of shoes threw off my stride and caused some real pain on the insides of my calves. I quickly became educated about pronation, gait and support in my quest for the right shoe. It paid off. I have great shoes now, and pain in my feet ankles or knees is no longer an issue.

Scripture mentions shoes in a key passage in Ephesians 6. Paul discusses putting on the armor of God and mentions the "preparation of the gospel of peace". Granted, combat boots are a little different than running shoes, but the purpose is the same- enabling you to move forward with traction and confidence.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ – We know what it is. We understand we've been saved from eternal judgment, and that we have eternal life ahead of us, but do we realize what power if gives us NOW. The good news is

that we are forgiven from every offense committed against a holy God,

that we are accepted,

that God delights in us just as He delights in His Son.

Not just on our good days. Every day. Favored. Accepted. Loved.

Walk in those shoes today. See if your steps aren't a little lighter!

There Is No Plan B

By Paula

Recreaction of intertitle from The A-Team base...
Image via Wikipedia

One day last week, on a date with my husband, I saw the new A-Team movie. Maybe you remember the television series. What struck me was the movie's tagline: "There is no plan B"

Times are desperate. The pressure's on. There's no turning back.

"Go into all the world and preach the gospel …"

There is no plan B.

It sounds crazy, but the only plan God has for spreading the gospel depends on people like me and you. There won't be any talking cactus, or messages in the sky or secret codes. It all rests with us. God does the prep work and the Holy Spirit draws folks, but a seed can't sprout unless it's planted. We are the planters.

Times are desperate. The pressure's on. There's no turning back.

In reaching our friends and family for Christ, there is no plan B.
