Quieting My Soul

By Paula Wiseman

quieting-my-soulO LORD, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; Nor do I involve myself in great matters, Or in things too difficult for me.
Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me.
O Israel, hope in the LORD From this time forth and forever. Psalm 131:1-3 (NAS)

My oldest is back at college, which means my youngest is feeling a little lonesome. In the evenings, she likes to get her pajamas, have a glass of chocolate milk then head to my bed with me to read or watch television for a little while. In that quiet snuggly time I hear her heart. Sometimes it’s frustrations with the big kids, but more often it’s about what she and her Welsh corgi puppy, Watson, will do, whenever she actually gets a Welsh corgi puppy. Occasionally, she’ll fall asleep nestled against me. No question, it’s the most relaxing part of my day, too.

This is the picture I get of Psalm 131. This Psalm is one of the Songs of Ascent, sung by the worshippers on their way to Jerusalem for the feasts. Now imagine yourself in the middle of the hectic Christmas rush, with a million and seven things to do. You know that feeling? Anticipation mixed with anxiety seasoned with exhaustion. The Israelites could have easily been overtaken by the same type of frantic preparation. They were traveling, often in large family groups, plus there were sacrifices to secure, and rituals to observe.

But in this psalm, David gives some guidance on how to approach that time of worship, how to prepare our hearts and minds to enter God’s presence.

Humility
He starts with declaration of what worship is not about. He is not proud or haughty. It is not about him, his preferences, his comfort.

Reality
David says, “I don’t worry about things that are out of my hands. I know my limitations.” He sets aside all other concerns.

Tranquility
This is good part. He has taken the time and effort to compose and quiet his soul. He’s like a child who isn’t demanding his needs be met but just wants to be near his mother, comforted by her presence, not by what he gets from her.

Security
The results: hope, and trust in God. When we come away from the quiet time in His presence, we leave knowing He is God, He is good, and He is in control.

I know the weekends are often busier than the work week, but I hope you carve out some quiet moments to simply be in God’s presence. It’s time well-spent.

Promises

By Paula Wiseman

The LORD swore an oath to David with a promise He will never take back (Psalm 132:11, NLT)

Not just to David.

"The one who comes to Me, I will by no means cast out."

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

"I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

God will never take back any of His promises.

No Record

By Paula Wiseman

A clean slateIf You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? Psalm 130:3

Can you imagine a game with no score?

A test with no grade?

A bill with no balance?

God doesn't keep track of how often we fall short, or how many times we fail or how much we owe.

He knows what it would mean, what it would do to us if He did.

And He loves us far too much for that.

Blessings of Fear

By Paula Wiseman

boy with Thank You God signBlessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. Psalm 128:1

This psalm was sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for Passover. It helped get their hearts and minds ready for worship.
We are approaching Easter.

The worshippers recounted the blessings of following God.
What blessings can you count?

The psalm mentions blessings in work, family, long life.
How has God blessed your work – even if it's not for pay?
How has God blessed your relationships – even if they aren't perfect?
How has God blessed you to help you reach the place where you are?

Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. Psalm 128:4

You are a testimony of God's blessing.

In Vain

By Paula Wiseman

Going over a blueprintUnless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.
(Psalm 127:1-2)

Vain is repeated 3 times in two short verses. It means useless. It can even carry the idea of being idolatrous.

Let me paraphrase:

It is a waste to pour yourself into a plan God isn't part of.
It is foolish to trust anyone else for your security.
God never meant for you to work yourself to the point of stress and death.

He will lead. He will defend. He will provide.

Trust Like a Mountain

By Paula Wiseman

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. Psalm 125:1

Trust. The Hebrew carries the ideas of being bold, confident, secure, and sure.

Those who trust in the Lord will not waver, slip, shake or fall.

I usually do a lot of wavering, slipping and shaking but when I read the next verse…

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 125:2

God surrounds us, protects us, shelters us, now and forever.

When I grasp that, trusting Him, with bold, confident assurance, is easy.
